Five things to check before you increase your marketing spend

More budget makes a working system bigger and a broken one more expensive. Before the next increase there are five checks worth running, one for each part of the work, and each can be done in an afternoon without buying anything. None of them is about the budget itself.

Check the offer before the channel: paid spend amplifies whatever it is given

If the message is not settled, more spend finds the limit faster. The usual sign is a campaign that performs for one narrow segment and nowhere else, which gets read as a channel problem. Write down who the offer is for, what it replaces and why someone would move. If that takes more than a page, the positioning is the constraint, not the media plan.

Check audience overlap, not follower count: reach is the cheapest number to look at

Follower count is easy to check and tells you little about whether an audience is yours. Ask for the breakdown by country, seniority and platform, and look at who replies rather than who follows. In fintech and Web3 this is a compliance question too, because the FCA now acts against creators directly.

Check depth against cadence: publishing volume stopped being a signal

When writing cost something, a steady schedule showed commitment. Now that generating text is close to free, volume proves nothing and thin pages compete with your good ones. Count how many of last quarter's posts answer a question a buyer actually asked. If the honest answer is two, the fix is fewer and deeper.

Check the handoff and your sending setup: a careless list now damages the whole domain

Two things go wrong after a lead arrives. Nobody owns the next step, so enquiries sit while the campaign that produced them keeps running. And the list gets treated as a broadcast channel, which used to mean poor results and now means something worse. Google and Yahoo have required authentication, one-click unsubscribe and a spam complaint rate below 0.3% since February 2024, and Microsoft has since done the same. Fail those and your sales email suffers alongside the newsletter.

Check whether reporting can name the source of revenue: last click is a guess with a decimal point

Open the report you use to move budget and find the closed-won deals. If the channel data and the CRM have never been joined, the number you are acting on credits whatever the buyer touched most recently rather than what persuaded them.
